Four months. For four months I travelled the world relying purely on the kindness of people who had proved to not particularly like me. I stayed on couches, floors, air-mattresses, hammocks, and, occasionally, beds, in 14 different countries for my first book, Five Ways to Carry a Goat.
How did I get in touch with my generous/fool-hardy hosts? I write The Backpacker blog for the Fairfax newspapers, so back in January 2009, I put out a cry for help, asking overseas-based readers to drop me an email me if they were prepared to let me stay with them. I didn’t care where they were – if they were up for it, I’d find them.
I got an incredible 400 replies, and chose my itinerary based purely around where the most interesting-sounding people lived. I managed a full lap of the globe and, mild bout of alcohol poisoning aside, had one amazing time.
I’ve since distilled that four months of craziness into the 360 pages that make up Five Ways to Carry a Goat – which hits shelves on May 3rd. I can’t wait.
But first, given this is supposed to be my bio page, here’s a bit about me. I’m an Australian travel writer, blogger, journalist and former men’s mag hack. I began my writing career at age eight by penning a fake soccer magazine to impress my English teacher. It was a work that, 20 years later, I’m still yet to surpass.
In my last 10 years as a “proper” writer I’ve penned travel stories and features for various newspapers and magazines around the country, and I like to pretentiously tell guests at dinner parties that I’ve been to more than 60 countries. I’m currently living in Australia, which is not exotic, but does have the added benefit of ridiculous public holidays like the Queen’s Birthday.
I cannot wait to read this! So you know, my friend discovered your blogs once we returned from our travels, and we have both followed ever since. You make us laugh SO much!! Good luck!
Hi Ben,
Of all nerds, I am probably proud to be a global travel one ! (visited over 100+ countries)
What an amazing idea ! Reading your blog, I am clearly a self confessed travel nerd too
I work for a telcoms company who would be happy to assist you with our automatic mapping journal. It will not only assist in staying in touch with home and your friendly couches around the world, but also map you as you travel !
Drop me a line when you get a chance,
Safe travels !
Rowena
Morning (???) Ben,
Nice work on the travel path so far. Any chance of getting your proposed route? I am introducing you to our listeners this AM! (14/5).
See you in the city of sin when?
Mick
Hey mate,
I liked your ’10 things to adopt from other countries’ article, I have loads of them myself (i.e. people selling popcorn on the street).
If you find yourself in Sucre Bolivia let me know, you can crash at my joint and I’ll take you dirt biking in the mountains then later on we can go to karaoke, it’s a great way to embarrass my fiance.
Adam
Mate, I reckon you’re a better writer and blogger than that tosser for the NY Times who calls himself, “The Frugal Traveller”. The wanker went around Europe on a budget of 100 euros a day! Hardly frugal.
The Grey Lady should toss him out and chuck you in.
Keep on scribing man.
Thanks mate. I’ll let you tell NY Times though… – Ben
Hi Ben – Are you on twitter at all??
Chris.
hi Ben,
we are older backpackers (sometimes flashpackers…..) and love your blogs and newspaper column. We are trying to find your article on “the travel wankers” from last year, as we’ve also been accused by some jealous non-travellers! Where can we find it? Keep writing – we’re sure there’s another book in you (sorry mate)
Thanks Marianne, glad you’re enjoying it. Think this is the blog you’re after: http://blogs.smh.com.au/travel/archives/2008/07/travel_wankers.html – Ben
Hi Ben,
I searched but couldn’t find a more private way to contact you.
I was wondering if i’d be able to interview you, I’m in the UK currently writing my university dissertation on whether travel guides are ruining destinations and it would be interesting to have the other side’s point of view that has done it off pure whim and has shunned the usual back packing way.
I’d very much appreciate a reply but I understand how busy you must be with the new book.
Many thanks!
Hi Ben,
Are you on twitter? if not, join! your readership will explode!
Look fwd to more of your posts,!
peace
Heena
Hi Benny,
You sound like an interesting character. Tell me though, is the book going to be as good as Max Walker’s How to Kiss a Crocodile?…or Dean Jones’ One Day Magic? Such classic reads!
